CHAPTER NINETEEN

We jump from our seats and run toward the kitchen. Was that Ma or Izzie? Did something happen to my nephew? Yet even with the adrenaline pumping, I know exactly who this involves.

Ma steps from the bathroom, shaking her head as if she has a nervous tic.

Even though I'm in the dining room archway, I can hear Nadia's shrill cackle. She scared Ma. Again. At this rate, Ma isn't going to invite me back to dinner next week. Okay, so that'll never happen. Sunday family time is too important to her. She'd take down or cover up all of the mirrors first.

"Are you okay?" I ask while she passes me.

She doesn't respond, and her mouth is set in a tight line. The anger or fear radiates off her skin.

I take a step back because I don't want to be the person she blows up on. She should yell at Nadia.

"What's going on? Are you okay, Rosa?" Winnie asks.

That's right. She doesn't know.

I fill her in on Nadia, her murder, and her ability to jump from mirror to mirror.

Instead of grimacing or being wide-eyed shocked like most people, her eyes light up. I'm momentarily surprised, but then I remember how she believes in the supernatural. She tried contacting her dead husband for a while after he died. I should've known that her limited experience with the paranormal would have her more fascinated than fearful.

"She's over here," Paulie shouts from the living room.

Most of my family stays behind. They aren't fans of screaming ballerinas.

I turn the corner and see Enzo directly in front of the mirror. Paulie is a step behind him to his left and Alice to his right. I allow Winnie to get in front of me so she has a better view.

"Is there anything else you can remember?" Enzo asks Nadia.

"Dude, you're bringing down the room. My adoring fans don't want to talk about murder." She waves her hand at those around my brother.

"This is important," Enzo says with a touch of annoyance in his voice.

She rolls her eyes and says, "No, that's all I know. Someone walked up behind me, and I blacked out before seeing who it was."

"What about enemies?" he asks.

These are questions I already asked her. Unless she remembered something different, he isn't going to get a useful answer.

She raises a brow. "Have you ever been in a roomful of mothers? They all want what's best for their children. No matter what they have to do to get it. Now stick them into a competitive environment where the outcome can be fame and fortune, and any of them could have killed me. I'm surprised they haven't killed each other yet."

From what I'd experienced, I'd say she has a point.

Enzo sighs and is about to step away when she says, "But if I remember anything, I know where to find you."

She laughs, and he walks off with a shudder.

"I can't believe this," Winnie whispers. There's a small smile on her face. "I have so many questions.
